What is technology? Application of the day: Shazam

It is one of the first apps that many people downloaded when they first bought a smartphone. Shazam isn’t just the name of the app anymore, it’s a verb. Listen to a song on the radio, in an advertisement or in a gym and you can “Shazam” it to see the song’s title and artist and even purchase the song from Apple.

If you only use Shazam this way, you are missing out on a few features that you will want to know about.

Shazam is one of the best apps for spotting future hits. You can find Shazam graphics by tapping on the word or icon in the upper right corner of the screen. Shazam lists and ranks the most “Shazamed” songs of the week. Songs that more people don’t know but listen to and ask for the name and artist.

The charts are broken down by city and country. I found out that a lot of people in Paris have Shazaming a song from UB-40 for some reason. So this reggae song is played and heard in Paris more than any other.

In the United States, many of the funniest songs are the ones you hear on TikTok and TV commercials. So it’s worth taking a look at the Shazam charts to see what the next big hit might be.

Shazam can now listen to songs played on your phone and name them while playing. This also works for TikTok videos. My favorite music app is Radio Garden which lets you listen to radio stations from all over the world. The radio does not always name the artist and the song title.

While listening to Austin Blues Radio on Radio Garden, I can open the Shazam app and press the big blue button. Within seconds I see that the song playing on my phone is by Gary Clark Jr.

Shazam not only gives me the name of the song, but I can see the lyrics and a list of other Clark song titles and albums as well as a list of similar artists.

Apple bought Shazam in 2018 and added other features as well.

You can listen to about 1.5 hours of the song from Apple Music, but there is a prompt if you want to purchase it. The app also gives you a free month of Apple Music if you subscribe in the Shazam app.

Have you ever heard a song in a movie, TV show, or commercial, but you can’t open the Shazam app fast enough to grab the title? I think we all have.

Apple has Siri accessibility turned on, so all you have to do is say “Hey Siri, Shazam this song”. Another way to quickly shazam a song on an iPhone is to use a shortcut. Go to the iPhone Shortcuts app and select the plus sign to add a new shortcut.
Choose “Scriptwriting”.

When prompted, the top line will say “Open” and “Application”. Tap the word “App” and you’ll see a list of all the available apps you can use. Scroll down and select Shazam.

Give the shortcut a name by pressing “New shortcut”, name it Shazam. And save in your iPhone settings, tap on “Accessibility” then on “Touch” Scroll down to the bottom of this page and select “Go back” If it is off, activate it by tapping on it.

You will see two options, one for double tap and one for triple tap. Select one of them and scroll down to ‘Shortcuts’ where you will find the open ‘Shazam’ shortcut you just configured.

Now, when you double or triple tap the back of your iPhone, the Shazam app will automatically open.

This is the fastest way I have found to Shazam something.
