Have you ever played on your PC and wondered what it would be like to wander the fantastical worlds of Night City in Cyberpunk or Los Santos in GTA V on your own? To leave the WASD keys or the PS4 pad behind and explore with your two feet? With the STEPL mobile appthis dream may not be too far away.
Recently posted to r/games by the solo developer behind STEPL, you can see a mysterious pair of legs moving up and down in place and causing characters from Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V, and Horizon: Forbidden West to start wandering! With a controller in one hand wielding the right analog stick and a phone in your pocket, it looks like the app lets you step into the shoes of your favorite characters (provided it’s not a racing game, of course).
Jumping into the Youtube video description, it looks like STEPL is designed as a training tool: “STEPL is a good training motivator if you play sitting for many hours instead of walking or straining to train – It allows you to get in shape while in-game. Put your phone in your pocket, and when you take action on the spot, your character will also step forward. This is also reflected on the official website , which champions goals such as saving time for users, helping with exercise motivation, and helping people live longer.
All in all, it’s a cool app that, while obviously designed as an exercise aid, could be a great component for that mystical dream of total gaming immersion that’s stuck in the minds of nerds for decades now. Already in the comments, both on Youtube and Reddit, people are excited about the concept of combining STEPL with other hardware like VR headsets in pursuit of that ultimate experience.
Does something like STEPL sound exciting to you? What games would you like to explore in your two shoes? Or don’t you see the appeal of sweating it out during your limited gaming R&R sessions? Let us know below!
