South Kitsap clinches Regional Wrestling Tag Team Championship



South Kitsap’s men’s wrestling team heads into next week’s state championships at the Tacoma Dome with a pair of postseason titles already under their belt.

The South Puget Sound League 4A tournament champions won Saturday’s first Region 3 tournament at Curtis High School. Wolves edged second-placed Graham-Kapowsin 166.5-158.5 and placed eight wrestlers in the top four in their respective weight classes to earn places at the Mat Classic, which takes place February 18-19.

“Proud of these kids fighting through adversity and making the most of this whirlwind one season,” said South Kitsap head coach Conner Hartmann.

South Kitsap junior Mitchell Neiner improved to 31-1 in winning an individual title at 126 pounds. He got a technical fall against Union’s Spencer Needham. Junior Phillip Chobot added a title at 182 pounds by winning a 5-3 decision over Rogers’ Michael Ager.

Stone Hartford (120) and Ben Laws (160) placed second. Other state qualifiers for South Kitsap were Chase Eaglin (4th, 126), Vincent Nabors (4th, 132), Jontae McHenry (3rd, 220) and David Young (4th, 220).

Bremerton scored 169.5 points and North Kitsap scored 116 points to place third and fourth in the Region 2A 2 boys meet at Orting High School. Orting won the tag team title with 271.5 points and White River placed second with 200 points.

Bremerton has seen three of its wrestlers win individual titles. Senior Diego Clemen beat Orting’s Levi Dicugno 10-5 in the 152-pound final; junior Thor Michaelson beat Steilacoom’s Vincent Parry 6-3 in the 160-pound final; and second Lars Michaelson forfeited teammate Roiel Sorensen in the final at 170.

Other state qualifiers for the Knights were Tanner Urrutia (3rd, 106), Logan Nickels (2nd, 126), Danny Wakonabo (3rd, 145) and Brennan Galloway (4th, 145).

North Kitsap junior Sofian Hammou won a title for the Vikings at 220 pounds by beating Franklin Pierce’s Derryck Wallace 13-2. He will be joined at State by his teammates Wyatt Trogeden (2nd, 113), Ben Gomez (4th, 160), Zakaria Hammou (3rd, 170) and Jesus Mares (4th, 285).

North Mason, Olympic and Kingston finished 10th, 11th and 12th in the team standings. North Mason State qualifiers were Izaiah Smith (4th, 126) and Jake Mathews (3rd, 152). Jefferson Hernandez (4th, 182) and Gavin Garner (3rd, 285) qualified for Kingston. No state-qualified Olympic competitor.

Central Kitsap placed seventh as a team in the Region 1 3A boys meet at Snohomish High School. Three Cougars qualified for the state: Conrad Bellon placed second at 120 pounds, Carter Chadwick placed fifth at 120 pounds and Quentin Lawrence placed third at 126 pounds. No Bainbridge wrestlers are qualified for the state.

Klahowya placed eighth in the Region I 1A boys meet at Hoquiam High School. Eagles junior Logan Wallis pinned Blaine’s Jack Cheatham in the final at 152 pounds. Other state qualifiers for Klahowya were Deacon Wintch (2nd, 106), Reece Decourval (4th, 120) and Logan Weaver (4th, 152).

In women’s regional wrestling, Central Kitsap’s Savannah Sinclair and Olympic’s Alexandrea Templeton won individual titles in the Region 2 meet at White River High School in Buckley. Sophomore Sinclair pinned Timberline’s Isabella Montaya 2:24 into the title fight at 100 pounds. Templeton, a junior, edged Auburn’s Mary Rush 6-5 in the final at 125 pounds. Makayla Heymann of North Kitsap (4th, 125) and Aubrie Ackland of Bainbridge (3rd, 140) also qualified.

At the Region 3 meet at Aberdeen High School, Monica Kaiser of South Kitsap took second place at 140lbs and Rosemary Brooks placed third at 115lbs.
