There are smart traffic lights all over the United States and in Metro Atlanta, but this one at Peachtree Corners is the first and only to run on 5G.

The free Travel Safely app runs in the background while you’re driving and plays audible alerts for upcoming traffic lights.

Applied Information’s Peter Ashley said the company began testing its Travel Safely app at Peachtree Corners this week, running it on T-Mobile’s 5G network.

“We can definitely see a significant difference,” he said.

The app also manages the city’s self-driving shuttles, to tell the signal to give the shuttle the go-ahead. Everything is controlled from its network operations center, which can “monitor, monitor, collect the data that comes out of it,” Ashley said.

Brandon Branham, assistant city manager of Peachtree Corners and chief technology officer, said the 5G-enabled app has already cut three minutes off the commute. The city plans to eventually install the same 5G connectivity at more than 30 intersections in the city.

“If we can save 10 seconds for a vehicle to pass through a signal, that’s a huge improvement in the operation and traffic flow in our city,” he said.

Driving it and testing it on the road, Gehlbach found that messages and alerts showed up almost instantly.

And in real-world conditions and traffic, milliseconds count for safety.

“Every split second we can send a message faster, end up saving more lives and that’s the aspect behind 5g. It’s so much faster than anything else,” Ashley said .

The same Travel Safely app can be used throughout the Atlanta metro area. Almost all of Marietta, Sandy Springs, and Alpharetta have smart signals that will talk to your car, but right now Peachtree Corners is the only town running on 5G.
