Newtown Youth Wrestling Association wins New England Tag Team Championship

The Newtown Youth Wrestling Association had already made its mark with numerous winning berths at the State Championships, but now the whole region is on notice as the Nighthawks travel to the New England Youth Wrestling Championships at Starland Sportsplex & Fun Park in Hanover, Mass. March 12, and walked away with the first-place team trophy, along with a trio of individual wins and six berths.

Camron Veneziano (10U, 68 lbs), Antonio Arguello (15U, 118 lbs) and Jake Maddox (15U, 136 lbs) all took first place. Veneziano also won the Most Dominant Wrestler award (see related article).

Second place went to Joey Cotter (10U, 64 lbs) and Max Malitsky (12U, 86 lbs). Newtown had two sixth-place finishes with Noah Blair (12U, 69 pounds) and Tristan Rosenschein (12U, 97 pounds).

“I couldn’t be happier to go to our region’s premier wrestling event and take first place,” said Nick Veneziano, Newtown Program President.

“It’s something we built for,” Veneziano said, adding that the team trophy has been achievable each of the past two years, but the program missed opportunities when the coronavirus canceled post-season tournaments. season.

Veneziano said the young wrestlers at Newtown High School who helped this program succeed in its campaign, share in the success of the youth program through the work they did at the youth level before moving on to high school.

“In a way, this championship is also part of it,” said Veneziano.
