Small businesses have struggled for the past 18 months, but there is a new app designed in Ottawa that wants to help them get back on their feet.
He promotes special offers in real time to people in the area who want to support the locals.
Nick Burden is co-owner of the new Byward Market Laugh Lounge Comedy Club. He wanted to attract a larger audience by turning to a new app.
“POPTikR definitely connects a lot of local residents with a lot of local businesses,” says Burden. “Obviously there’s a lot of foot traffic and tourists coming back to town, so we want them to know what we are. The Byward Market didn’t have a comedy club, so POPTikR is just going to help us get word out. “
POPTikR is free and available to any business interested in increasing foot traffic at the door.
Consumers using the app can locate area restaurants and stores, and businesses can post promotions and deals to entice them to their place.
“Being part of this app also means including people in all current offers and promotions. invite them to come do their shopping, have their hair done or simply come and say hello, ”explains Jessica Thomson, director of Salon Fiorella.
The pandemic hasn’t made it easy to own a small business, and POPTikR founder and CEO Kamy Dhanoa says that’s where the app comes in.
“So when you open the app, it shows you the different pop-ups that are online as we speak,” says Dhanoa. “People don’t know unless they get inside. So what our app does is show and highlight, whether it’s hot products, bundle gift boxes, whatever. So that they can visually see and encourage people to explore the area. “
Dhanoa says she wanted to create something that gives all small businesses a level playing field and doesn’t have to compete for search engine optimization, which sometimes costs businesses thousands to be the best result.
“I like that it’s free,” says Pat Nicastro, owner of La Bottega. “You know, we’re being asked all the time to be a part of different apps and apps, and there’s always a cost involved. The good thing about this one is that there is no cost to the business. It’s a win-win for everyone.
The app can be used across Canada, making it ideal for tourists looking for new places to visit. So far, it has received good reviews from business owners here in the capital.
“You know, COVID kind of got rid of this dog-eating dog world when it comes to small businesses,” Burden says. “And it shows that if we all work together, we can thrive together.”
POPTikR is available now for iOS and Android devices.
