SIOUX FALLS, SD — After missing out on the Tag Team Championship victory at the Mitchell Invitational last Friday, the Mitchell Kernels Women’s Golf Team wasted no time in recovering. Right after the tournament, the girls were already planning their next practice, wanting to get back to training the next day.
That extra effort over the weekend apparently paid off on Monday as the Kernels left Elmwood Golf Course in Sioux Falls with a team score of 330, finishing 42 over par for win the Warrior Invitational Tag Team Championship.
Allison Meyerink led the way for the Kernels, finishing in seventh place overall with a score of 79 (+7). Quinn Dannenbring followed Meyerink, finishing tied for eighth at 80 shots (+8) that day. Lara Widstrom and Maddie Childs rounded out the Kernels top four, with Widstrom tied for 12th at 85 shots (+13) and Childs tied for 14th at 86 shots (+14).
Jayli Rients and Ava Eliason were not included in the team score, but they still performed well to add to Mitchell’s successful performance. Rients finished tied for 22nd with a score of 94 shots (+22) while Eliason finished tied for 43rd with a score of 103 shots (+31).
The individual championship was split between Claire Yunag of Sioux Falls Lincoln and Tanna Phares of Rapid City Stevens, tied for first at 74 shots (+2). In the team standings, defending Class AA state champions Sioux Falls O’Gorman trailed Mitchell in second place (334 hits, +46) while Rapid City Stevens placed third (336 hits, +48). ).
The Kernels are out until next Tuesday, May 24, when they travel to Hillsview Golf Course in Pierre for the Eastern South Dakota Invitational, where they will attempt to defend their 2021 ESD Conference crown.
