Indian men beat Hong Kong to advance to final, women withdraw to semi-final

This is the third time that Indian men have made the final after having already done so in 1981 and 2012.

Kuala Lumpur: The seeded Indian men have booked a place in the final of the 20th Asian Team Squash Championship with a 2-0 victory over Hong Kong in the semi-final here on Friday.

However, the third-seeded women’s team lost 1-2 to Hong Kong in the semifinals despite being given the lead by No.1 player Joshna Chinappa.

In the men’s match, Saurav Ghosal beat Yip Tsz Fung in four games after losing the first match after Ramit Tandon gave India the lead with a loss to Henry Leung to set up a top clash on Saturday against the Malaysia, second seed, a 2- 0 winner over Japan.

World No.15 Ghosal rebounded from being one game away from Fung winning the next three to win 10-12, 11-6, 11-6, 15-13 in a 55-minute game.

Tandon also hit back after losing the opener to beat Leung in a four-game clash.

This is the third time that Indian men have made the final after having already done so in 1981 and 2012.

In the women’s semifinals, Chinappa put India ahead with a relentless four-game victory over Liu Tsz Ling.

However, Sunayna Kuruvilla and Urwashi Joshi fell short of their opponents, losing in back-to-back matches to give Hong Kong the victory.

Results: Men’s team event: Semi-final: India defeated Hong Kong 2-0 (Saurav Ghosal defeated Yip Tsz Fung 10-12, 11-6, 11-6, 15-13 (55m); Ramit Tandon a defeated Henry Leung 4-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-5 (37m)).

Women’s semi-final: Hong Kong beat India 2-1 (Liu Tsz Ling lost to Joshna Chinappa 11-9, 5-11, 7-11, 5-11 (33m)); Ho Tze Lok defeated Sunyana Kuruvilla 9-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-8 (40m); Tong Tsz Wing defeated Urwashi Joshi 12-10, 11-4, 11-6 (24m)).
