India will participate in the 2022 World Team Championship!

The Indian team (Open) has already contested the FIDE World Tag Team Championship 5 times before – in 2009, 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2019. Interestingly, the only time the Indian team (Open) has won a medal, it was the first time she played the event, in 2009.

2019 was also a big year for Team India – even though India finished 4th, GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly and GM Adhiban Baskaran won individual gold medals in Tables 1 and 3 respectively!

The most impressive performance at the World Team Championships for the Indian team came in India, when the women’s team won a historic silver medal at the 2021 World Women’s Team Championship.

India’s squad at the 2022 World Tag Team Championship

Here is the Team India squad for the 2022 World Tag Team Championships to be held in Jerusalem, Israel. All ratings shown are live player ratings at the moment.

Team captain: GM Vaibhav Suri

GM Vaibhav Suri is a very experienced grandmaster and trainer, and he will be the team captain of the Indian team. Notably, Vaibhav was also the runner up in the Indian A team at the 2022 Chennai Chess Olympiad where the team finished 4th. Right now, GM Vaibhav Suri is in action at the 2022 Bangkok Open. He has a good chance of finishing in the top 3 in a very tough event!

GM Vidit Gujrathi has been on terrific form over the past few months. After taking 3rd position in the very strong Shusha Chess Rapid and Blitz, Vidit scored an incredible 6/7 for his Team Novy Bor Chess Club, winning the European Club Cup gold medal and the European Cup medal. individual money in Table 2. Vidit will be Team India’s highest rated player in this event, playing in Table 1.

GM Nihal Sarin (2670)

Even after winning the individual gold medal at the Chess Olympiad, look at the calm on Nihal’s face!

One of the brightest youngsters in Indian chess, GM Nihal Sarin recently shook the world after knocking out world number one. 2 GM Ding Liren at the Chesscom World Chess Championships. GM Krishnan Sasikiran (2629)

One of India’s most experienced chess grandmasters, GM Krishnan Sasikiran will represent Team India in the World Team Chess Championship. An interesting fact is that GM Sasikiran was playing in the top tier of Team India in their very first World Teams, back in 2009! Sasikiran recently had a strong performance at the 2022 Liffré International Open, where he finished 1st with a score of 7.5/9.

GM SP Sethuraman (2648)

The 4th member of the team is Grandmaster SP Sethuraman, a person who has consistently performed well in the major tournaments of 2022. Sethuraman played excellent chess in the Fagernes Open ’22, finishing 4th in a very strong field. Right now, he is participating in the Asian Continental Championships which is taking place in New Delhi and he has scored 3 points out of 4 games so far.

GM Abhijeet Gupta (2607)

GM Abhijeet Gupta is another experienced player who has represented Team India in many big events, the most recent being Chennai Chess Olympiad 2022. Abhijeet had 2 great performances after the Olympiad – finishing 4th in the very strong Dubai Open 2022, and winning the 1st Bikaner International GM Open.

The competition

A total of 12 teams (including India) will participate in this event. The rosters of the participating teams include stars like Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Anish Giri, Teymur Radjabov and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, as well as up-and-coming prodigies like Javokhir Sindarov and illustrious veterans like Vasyl Ivanchuk and Alexei Shirov. . Israel, Poland, Ukraine, China, Netherlands, France, South Africa, Uzbekistan, United States, Spain, Azerbaijan.

Schedule, time control

Of the 12 teams, 2 pools will be created of 6 teams each. The first 5 rounds of the event/group stage of the event will be played as a round robin. After that, a total of 8 teams (4 from each pool) will be selected for the Knockouts. The event time control is 45 minutes + 10 second increment for the whole match.
