Connetquot swept all four events – vault, bars, beam and floor – to win the Suffolk County Tag Team Championship on Saturday at Smithtown East High School.

“It’s the most amazing feeling; I’m going to cry,” said Connetquot gymnastics coach Renee Guerrieri. “They were on fire today, and we are so proud.”

Connetquot won his first county championship since 1990, totaling 177.775 points after scoring 44.950 on vault, 42.375 on bars, 44.400 on beam and 46.050 on floor.

Second-year student Alexandra Melchiona placed first (37.525) in the all-around competition, and her sister, Avery Melchiona, a seventh-year student, placed third (35.300). Isabella Field of Bay Shore / Islip was second (35.650).

“I’m so proud this is my first year on the team,” said Avery Melchiona. “I was nervous, but I knew we could do it and having my sister here is amazing.”

Alexandra, who placed first in vault (9.400), broke Connetquot’s school record of 9.35.

“It’s one of the best moments of my gymnastic career so far,” said Alexandra. “Being able to say hello after a routine is such an amazing feeling.”

Smithtown was second (173.325) and Bay Shore / Islip was third (166.600) in a gymnasium that included six teams and 75 gymnasts.

“It’s been a year with COVID-19, but to see our top six teams here today is fantastic,” said Suffolk gymnastics coordinator Pat Smith. “The coaches and parents at Smithtown did a great job in making this event happen for us to do. “

On Monday, Bay Shore Middle School will host the Section XI Individual Championship, and on Wednesday, Farmingdale Gymnastics Academy will host the first-ever Long Island Gymnastics Championship.

“Due to the pandemic we couldn’t have a state tournament,” said Smith, “so instead Nassau and Suffolk are going head-to-head and we’re impatient.”
