CEDAR TOWN — The Canyon View High School Talons drill team won the 3A State Championship on Friday night.

Competing at the UCCU Center on the University of the Valley of Utah campus in Orem, the Talons placed first in the military and dance categories and second in showmanship, finishing ahead of runner-up North Sanpete for the title. .

This is Canyon View’s second state drill championship, with the other scheduled for 2011.

Canyon View head coach Nicole Mikkelson said she and her fellow coaches were “beyond proud” of the Talons’ performance in state.

“They came out and hit three amazing routines, leaving everything they had on the floor,” Mikkelson told Cedar City News on Saturday. “We couldn’t have asked for a better end to an incredible season.”

The Talons were part of a three-for-three sweep of Southern Utah high schools winning state drill titles on Friday: The Dixie Jetettes won their third straight 4A title earlier in the day, while the Kanab Larriettes won the 2A State Championship Trophy later. same evening.

On Saturday morning, the girls of the 34-member Team Talons boarded a fire truck for a celebratory parade that headed north down Cedar City’s Main Street to Canyon View High School.
