CAA Reaffirms Decision To Ban JMU From Team Championship Eligibility After Sun Belt Move | University sport

For the Colonial Athletic Association, there will be no change in position regarding James Madison.

The league said Wednesday night that the CAA board of directors, after a meeting on Tuesday, reaffirmed its decision to deny a waiver request from JMU to allow its athletic programs to compete for the team championships this school year.

A CAA rule prohibits schools from doing so when announcing their intention to leave the league. JMU announced on Saturday its intention to join the Sun Belt conference

“The conference has a rulebook, which has been in place for some time and of which JMU was well aware,” CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio said Wednesday morning before the announcement of the reaffirmation. “And these rules are specific enough that once you have given notice of withdrawal from the conference, you are no longer eligible to participate in the conference team championships.”

Tuesday’s meeting took place following a request for further review from the JMU administration and after the receipt of a petition prepared by the JMU athletes with the aim of bringing the administrators to the league to reconsider their decision to maintain the settlement. As of Wednesday night, that petition had over 1,200 signatures from people in other schools who supported JMU’s efforts.
