Radio amateurs from central Illinoi and beyond will converge in Carlinville on Saturday August 7 for a “Hamfest” which will include numerous outdoor exhibits, seminars, an indoor and outdoor flea market, radio controlled aircraft displays. , price drawings, amateur radio tests and more.
The annual event, the West Central Illinois Hamfest, was postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year it is returning to its traditional location at Macoupin County Fairgrounds, 21149 Route 4 in Carlinville, Ill. 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine. Admission is $ 5 per person, children 16 and under are free.

Sangamon Valley Radio Club based in Springfield, the Okaw Valley Radio Club in Greenville and the Montgomery County Radio Club, Hilsboro, the annual event not only attracts amateur radio operators (also known as “hams”), but also hosts the public.
Among other exhibits, Hamfest enthusiasts will get a glimpse of local emergency response resources and see radio controlled aircraft provided by the Springfield-based Sangamon Valley Radio Control Flight Club chapter of the Model Aeronautical Academy. , who will participate in the WADA sanctioned event and exchange meet for the first time, reflecting the close connection between the two hobbies. Depending on the model, operators of certain radio-controlled aircraft must hold at least a Technician-level Amateur Radio license issued by the Federal Communications Commission in order to operate their craft. All amateur radio operators must hold an FCC license ranging from technician to advanced.
Free classes hourly starting at 8:00 a.m., will include an overview of the role of amateur radio emergency operations in earthquakes and other disasters, amateur satellites and space weather, portable amateur radio operations, hobby radio controlled planes; and a current snapshot of Amateur Radio Relay Legaue (ARRL), the national organization to which the four hamfest sponsor clubs are affiliated.
