San Francisco: A federal judge in the United States has ordered Apple to allow developers to add links to external payment options on the App Store by December 9, dismissing the tech giant’s request for a reprieve.

The order came Tuesday night in the Epic Games antitrust lawsuit against Apple in California, filed last year by the developer of Fortnite and which went on trial this year.

“Apple’s motion is based on a selective reading of the findings of this Court and ignores all of the findings that supported the injunction,” the new order says, reports The Verge.

Although Apple won the lawsuit by a large margin, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers sided with publisher Fortnite on restrictions on in-app purchases on the App Store.

“This will be the first time Apple has allowed live links in an app for digital content. It will take months to understand the technical, economic, business and other issues,” said Apple lawyer Mark Perry. .

Apple intends to appeal to the Ninth Circuit for a stay of the payment order from the App Store.

“Apple believes that no further business changes should be necessary to come into effect until all appeals in this matter are resolved. We intend to ask the Ninth Circuit for a stay based on these circumstances,” an Apple spokesperson said.

The earlier September 10, 2021 ruling in the Epic Games antitrust case ordered Apple to no longer prevent developers from including in their apps and buttons metadata, external links, or other calls to action. which direct customers to purchasing mechanisms, in addition to In -Purchase applications. “

Following the September ruling, Apple appealed and requested a stay of the injunction in early October.

While Apple won 9 out of 10 claims made by Epic Games, it lost one. That claim alone was that Apple illegally blocked consumers from choosing which payment system to use for in-app purchases.

Epic Games is best known as the creator of Fortnite, a very popular video game played by around 400 million people around the world.
