St. Louis radio amateurs will participate in a communications exercise
St. Louis, Missouri, September 12, 2022: This year, amateur radio operators from the various emergency communications teams in St Louis will conduct a mock exercise on Saturday, October 8, 2022. The teams will test their ability to communicate with the County Emergency Management Division using only amateur radio equipment . Individual amateur radio operators will also help collect community situation reports and provide them to their local emergency management teams using a variety of voice and digital methods. This exercise will include various amateur radio emergency communications teams from services such as ARRL’s ARES® (Amateur Radio Emergency Service®) and RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service).
Additionally, teams will test their ability to deliver health and wellness messages to residents, a long-standing tradition of amateur radio. Health and wellness messaging allows a resident to relay a message such as “I’m fine” to friends or family outside the affected area using a nationwide traffic system powered by an amateur radio.
This year’s exercise is titled “Operation Deep Freeze” and will be based on the concept of a major ice/snow storm in the greater St. Louis area.
The slogan we all see, ‘When all else fails, amateur radio,’ would really take on its true meaning with a complete breakdown of the communications infrastructure,” said Steven Wooten, emergency coordinator and director of the exercise of St Louis ARES.
Wooten added: “Unlike previous years where crews deployed to the area, this year we will be setting up in the area surrounding the County Emergency Management Center, located at 1150 Hanna Road in Ballwin. This will allow any issues that teams may encounter to be resolved quickly and will encourage the public to witness emergency communication in action.
The exercise will take place from 8:00 a.m. CDT to 12:00 p.m. CDT on October 8, 2022. For more information, please contact Steven Wooten (St Louis ARES Emergency Coordinator) at [email protected] or Bill Sauer (St. Louis ARES Public Information Officer) at [email protected]
