SARANAC LAKE – The Adirondack Amateur Radio Association, or AARA, recently received a $ 650 grant for a Saranac Lake Rotary Club community organization to upgrade emergency and backcountry communications equipment.

“We are honored to be entrusted with these funds to help us upgrade the emergency emergency communications equipment of the Adirondack Health Emergency Service in Saranac Lake,” said Barry Brogan, coordinator of the AARA team. “We maintain ham radio equipment at all health facilities in Tri-Lakes and are linked via the Whiteface Mountain repeater system to all other upstate New York hospitals and operations centers. county emergency. Since we first installed radios in the early 2000s, technology has changed and the new radio that we are going to install in the emergency department actually allows us to access it remotely from anywhere on the hospital campus.

The Amateur Radio Association will also purchase portable antenna equipment that can be quickly installed anywhere accessible by a vehicle.

“We are purchasing two new antennas and towers that can be supported by a trailer hitch and set up just about anywhere,” Brogan said. “This enhances our ability to fulfill our mission of providing emergency communications to the health care community as well as state and local agencies, such as state rangers, during search and rescue missions. . This equipment is also used to provide backcountry communications for community events like the 90 mile canoe race.

The Saranac Lake Rotary Club provides grants each spring to community non-profit organizations to support a wide variety of community improvement initiatives. Information is available on the Rotary Club website.
