Limuru Country Club team captain, Dennis Maara, will once again take charge of a four-man squad that will compete in the upcoming African Golf Team Championship to be held September 25-31, 2022 in Egypt.
Other team members include John Lejirma of Railway Golf Club, Adel Balala of Nyali Golf and Country Club and Michael Karanga of Kiambu Golf Club.
This is the same team that competed in and won the just-concluded Region IV and Victoria Cup events.
“The team has been on top form with previous victories in Region IV and the Victoria Cup. We look forward to taking on the next assignment at the AAGTC in Egypt. Playing against the continent’s best fans will be a true test of our abilities as a team. Myself, Adel, Lejirma and Karanga have been working hard individually and will be training with our coach after the break following our recent success. Says team captain Dennis Maara
The team, which will be led by Kenya Golf Union (KGU) President Njani Ndiritu, trained under junior national coach John van Liefland ahead of the championship which drew a total of 15 countries.
Some of the countries considered relevant are South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Morocco, Ghana, Tunisia, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Malawi and Seychelles among others .
“The team have been at the top after previous wins in Region IV and the Victoria Cup and we at the Union are sure they will take home another trophy.” Said Mr. Njani Ndiritu, Chairman of the Kenya Golf Union.
The Africa Amateur Golf Team Championship event remains one of the most prestigious golf competitions in Africa.
It takes place every two years and is played according to the Eisenhower format. It is a 72-hole stroke game played over three days. Each country is represented by a team of four players.
The team score is obtained by adding the best three of the four raw scores. The trophy is awarded to the team with the lowest overall score.
