Add amateur radio to your disaster toolbox

Submitted by the San Juan County Amateur Radio Society.

Has COVID made you think about what you can do to prepare for future emergencies and disasters, like the inevitable Cascadia Subduction Zone mega-earthquake? We know it will cripple our region for weeks or even months, cutting off electricity, transportation and regular communications. Consider adding ham radio skills to your personal preparations.

The San Juan County Amateur Radio Society will be hosting a free Amateur Radio (“Amateur Radio”) license exam on May 15 in Friday Harbor. Social distance testing will follow COVID minimum contact protocols according to state guidelines. The tests will be administered to each candidate separately. Interested parties should contact Kenny KU7M at [email protected] All ages are welcome! Pre-registration is mandatory before May 10.

Amateur radio is a fun and interesting hobby for anyone interested in science and keen to help the community by providing voice and data communication capabilities during disasters. Proficiency in Morse code is no longer required. Self-paced books and training resources are available at Local volunteer mentors can help you study remotely and learn about amateur radio.
